Lesson 1
The purpose of this course is to teach you that nothing is outside your mind and therefore you have complete freedom to choose. This is not a course of magic, although miracles are possible if you choose to use the power of your mind differently.
Begin by applying this idea to whatever your glance rests upon at first, then slowly and steadily increase the range of subjects for which it will be applied. Try to be indiscriminate in your selection of subjects, not selecting objects on the basis of size, brightness, color, or relative importance to you. If you find it necessary to select objects with a certain degree of diligence, it may help to close your eyes for a moment or two at intervals.

In this first lesson, we learn that what you A course in miracles lesson 1 see is simply an expression of the complex network of thoughts that associate with each object. Whether you like what you see or not, it’s there because of what your mind attached to it.
The purpose of these exercises is to train your mind in a systematic way to a different perception of everything you see. Each lesson is planned to be generalized, so that you will see that it applies equally to everyone and everything you encounter in the world. This training will be complete when you have learned to see the world as it really is.
To practice this idea, start by applying it to the things close at hand. Then increase your range by looking at objects that are a little farther away. Avoid the temptation to select your subjects based on size, brightness, color or material. If you do, you will introduce strain into the exercise. Instead, try to glance indiscriminately at the things around you and see them as being equal in their lack of meaning. Eventually you will reach the point where your gaze can rest on almost anything without strain. If this is easy for you, then you have understood the first part of the lesson.
